NATIONAL SENIOR HEALTH AND FITNESS DAY – WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 2021
This wonderful day has been set aside for seniors to participate in activities just devoted to seniors at numerous locations. Its focus is on being active, and it occurs annually.
Put on your sneakers for National Senior Health And Fitness Day.
On the last Wednesday in May each year, approximately 100,000 senior adults will participate in activities across the United States for this national observance.
Chris Johnson of the YMCA has said that “the image of an older adult sitting on a porch in a rocking chair is long gone – today’s older adult is more active, engaged and in control of their health.”
Population-wise older Americans make up 30% of the population. This figure is rapidly increasing to 45%. And, according to the CDC, adults who are 50 years old and older have a 70% chance of getting at least one chronic disease UNLESS, among other things, they make lifestyle changes such as increasing their physical activity.
The Benefits of Physical Activity
The benefits of physical activity are enormous. They can be done from the privacy of your home or at a pool or a community center. Exercises can be modified to suit any limitations. Low impact exercises include walking, swimming, and yoga. There is even wheelchair yoga available.
Some of the benefits include:
- ease symptoms of anxiety
- helps reduce or control blood pressure
- maintain strength, healthy joints and muscles
- offer community and companionship when done in groups
- reduce fall risk and increase the ability to live independently
- reduce the risk of colon cancer and diabetes
- reduces and prevents arthritis joint swelling and pain
How You Can Celebrate National Senior Health And Fitness Day
We have put together some ideas given by the YMCA for you to do in celebration of National Senior Health And Fitness Day.
- Go To The Park
Check out your nearest park and the trails that they offer. All the Cleveland Municipal park trails are wide enough for walkers. Enjoy nature and finish up with a healthy picnic. - Attend A Fitness Class
The class can be at a private gym or a local community center. It doesn’t matter. Just be sure that there is a structured workout session with an instructor demonstrating the proper technique to prevent injury and to help motivate you. - Walk To Health.
There may be walks that are being put together by organizations. Check it out. It would be a wonderful opportunity to get your exercising in and meeting new people at the same time. But don’t forget, grabbing a nice walk with a friend or family member is just as good. - Work In The Garden
This is a leisurely hobby good for both health and fitness. You can grow a personal garden or a plot in a community garden. If you grow vegetables and herbs, they can become a part of cooking a healthy meal for you and your family. - Dance
Sign up for a Zumba class or a Tango class or just turn on the music and dance in your living room. You don’t even need a partner – no one will see, and you’ll have so much fun and not need to worry about stepping on anyone’s toes.
Please join seniors across the country in celebrating National Senior Health & Fitness Day.
And, if your conversations turn to “who can do” or “where can I find’ YOU know the answer.
